Piracy Fight Shuts Down Music Blogs
By BEN SISARIO
Thanksgiving Day had barely begun when Kevin Hofman’s BlackBerry buzzed. It was one of the technical operators of OnSmash.com, Mr. Hofman’s popular hip-hop blog, telling him that the site had gone mysteriously blank just after midnight.
“At first I thought it was hackers,” Mr. Hofman said. But within hours a notice went up on the site saying that its domain name had been seized by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement unit of the Department of Homeland Security; it was one of dozens of sites shut down, accused of copyright infringement and selling counterfeit goods.
But Mr. Hofman, a brawny Long Islander in his early 30s who formerly worked for a major record label, does not think of himself as a pirate.
OnSmash.com and the handful of other music blogs shut down by the government post brand-new songs and videos without licenses, but much of that material is often leaked to them by managers, music labels and even the artists themselves.
As a result, these sites have a complex symbiosis with the music business. While the Recording Industry Association of America wants to shut them down, the rank and file of the record labels — particularly in hip-hop circles — uses them as marketing tools and publicity outlets.
“To Joe Q. Public, ‘leak’ sounds like a bad word,” Mr. Hofman said in an interview at a pizzeria on the Lower East Side, his lawyer by his side. “But if you’ve ever been in a marketing meeting at a record label, it’s ‘Hey, can you leak this to the blogs?’ Leak is now a marketing verb.”
In addition to OnSmash.com, the music sites shut down included Dajaz1.com, RapGodFathers.com and rmx4u.com; another, torrent-finder.com, is a search engine for users of BitTorrent, a file-sharing system that can be used for any kind of data. (READ MORE)

Survivors Celebrate A Family Reunion
By Jon Caramanica
“We paying respect to the dead right now,” Juelz Santana told the Hammerstein Ballroom crowd Friday night, urging a moment of silence for the friends he had lost in recent months. “We gotta get this right.”
Moments before, the screens above him onstage were displaying their photos — G-Baby, D-Train, Classik, Johnny Jerajian, Huddy 6 — while D.R.S.’s threnody “Gangsta Lean” played over the speakers.
The crowd mostly kept quiet, then the D.J. broke the mood with the sound of gunshots. Juelz Santana was not amused.
“I need some better gunshots!” he screamed.
With the Diplomats — Cam’ron, Jim Jones, Juelz Santana, Freekey Zekey — the tragic never gets in the way of the theatrical, and vice versa. This was the reunion show of this Harlem rap crew, torn asunder a few years ago by petty animus and financial accusations back and forth, survivors of arrests and family struggles, but now brought back together for another chance at harmony, if not quite world domination. Nugget of truth
If you want to date a woman do you call her each and every day? Bombard her with text messages? Not only does this not work, you'll be arrested as a stalker. Today, everyone selling in the entertainment business is stalking the audience, and it's positively creepy. The way you get a date with your crush is to be so attractive, so desirable that when you finally put the offer out, she can't help but accept. When you put your concert tickets on sale, fans clamor, because they believe in you.

Shyne the Jewish rapper in the NY Times
Eat your heart out Kosha Dillz!
Rapper Finds Order in Orthodox Judaism in Israel
By Dina Kraft
JERUSALEM — The tall man in the velvet fedora and knee-length black jacket with ritual fringes peeking out takes long, swift strides toward the Western Wall. It’s late in the day, and he does not want to miss afternoon prayers at Judaism’s holiest site
“We have to get there before the sun goes down,” he says, his stare fixed behind a pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses, the first clue that this is no ordinary Jerusalem man of God. It’s the rapper Shyne, the Sean Combs protégé who served almost nine years in New York prisons for opening fire in a nightclub in 1999 during an evening out with Mr. Combs and his girlfriend at the time, Jennifer Lopez.
“My entire life screams that I have a Jewish neshama,” he said, using the Hebrew word for soul.
Living as Moses Levi, an Orthodox Jew in Jerusalem (he legally changed his name from Jamaal Barrow), he shuttles between sessions of Talmud study with some of the most religiously stringent rabbis in the city and preparations for a musical comeback. (READ MORE)

Isiah Thomas...Delusional after all these years
From ESPN.com
Exiled Isiah is itching for an encore
by Ian O'Connor
MIAMI -- Isiah Thomas thought he would be dead by age 20, so at 49 he offers no apologies for betting on himself. Exiled in Miami, haunted by his proximity to LeBron James, Thomas embraces his articles of blind faith like one would a baby in a storm.
Isiah believes James (and perhaps Dwyane Wade) would be starting for the New York Knicks if Isiah had remained president of the team.
Isiah believes he can recruit James out of Miami and into Madison Square Garden in 2014.

NY Times Article re: Promo for Jay Z's new book
Find Jay-Z’s Memoir at a Bookstore, or on a Billboard
By ANDREW ADAM NEWMAN
PRINT advertising by publishing houses tends to boast about books that are being bold and original, but that can seldom be said of the ads themselves, which generally consist of ho-hum photographs of the book and author, a brief description of the subject matter and laudatory blurbs.
But a new campaign for “Decoded,” the memoir by the hip-hop performer Jay-Z, promises to be a real head-turner. Beginning Monday, reproductions of entire pages of the book will appear unannounced in locales referred to in those pages.
“If in certain pages Jay-Z is talking about something related to Times Square, then those pages might be on billboards in Times Square,” said David Droga, creative chairman Droga5, the New York agency heading the campaign. Mr. Droga declined to reveal locations beforehand (including the veracity of the Times Square example), but did describe the campaign in oblique terms.
While about half of the pages will be displayed in traditional outdoor advertising like billboards, the rest will be offbeat, printed in one instance on the bottom of a hotel swimming pool, in another on the lining of jackets in a store display window, and in another on the felt of pool tables in a pool hall, said Mr. Droga. NYT gives Flockaveli a rave review!
The beats and the lyrics matter on “Flockaveli,” the debut album by the Atlanta rapper Waka Flocka Flame, but everything important about this album is captured in the ad-libbed vocal interjections sprinkled throughout, which approximate the fight captions of old “Batman” episodes: “Bam!” “Pow!” “Whap!” “Boom!” “Oof!”
“Flockaveli” (Asylum/Warner Brothers) is an album about pain, the physical kind. It’s a brutalist concoction, one of the most bracing and unforgiving hip-hop releases in recent memory. Almost single-handedly, and without context, it rediscovers hip-hop’s pugnacity in an era of extreme melodic sophistication, an idiosyncratic anomaly.
Waka Flocka Flame, a protégé of the wordplay specialist Gucci Mane, is a stilted, awkward and possibly awful rapper. In interviews, he speaks openly of his disdain for high-end lyricism. His rhymes barely merit quoting. But he’s thrilling nonetheless, a dynamo of emphasis and innate charm. (READ MORE)
By the way, shout out to Waka, his brother Paul, Dwayne Jones and the whole entourage.

Real Blog
I haven't actually posted a real blog in a very long time. I don't even know if anyone reads this shit. Whatever. Alls I know is that I'm putting everything on the fucking line right now for this music shit and I WILL make it happen. I'm proud of what I've accomplished thus far, and I did it all while billing 2,000+ hours a year for 5 years as a corporate lawyer while starting a family. Now the real fun begins. I will not let the negative people and the crazies get in my way. And you have to deal wade through the bullshit with people like that every second of every day in this business. But there are good people out there doing positive things. You know who you are. Some of you I talk to several times a week. Some of you I lost touch with and I'm trying to reconnect. You really have to build genuine relationships in this business and it's really fucking hard, especially when you have a million other things going on in your life. But you know who's real and who's fake and who's willing to help you get to where you need to go without asking for anything in return because they believe in good karma. And that's real. And I'm far from a spiritual person. But you don't screw someone over just because they screwed you over. And you don't screw over the next man. Shout out to everyone whose music I've posted on this blog. Just about all of you are real friends and good people. Let's keep this rap shit going before it all falls apart.
My motto has been and continues to be: if you're talented and work hard and don't give up, something will happen for you. You might not be the next Jay Z or Kanye, but you will see success in this industry.
If you agree with me, walk with me.
Everyone else can go pound sand. That's word to Claudius.
I'm out.

Random VMA thoughts
Damn. Eminem looks fucking old.
What the hell is Rihanna wearing???
Was that Lil' Jon or Dave Chappelle??
Why does Lindsey Lohan look like a light skinned black girl with a bad weave???
I suppose the Chelsea Handler Lady Gaga impersonation was funny.
Why are they cutting away to the old white chick from Role Models as much as they are Lady Gaga???
Is Rick Ross really riding around in wheel chair while BMF is playing???
Best Female Video: Rooting for Katy Perry. Gaga will probably win. Adair should be there instead of Kesha. Sigh.
Gaga's shoes are actually kinda ill.
What the fuck was on Kesha's face?
Best Rock Video: Wow. The only group I've even heard of here is MGMT.
The cast of Jackass is on stage. The real jackass is the guy wearing the rubber suit. WTF??? Woops. That's Will.i.am. What the hell?
Kim Kardashian. Fashion icon???? She also kinda likes like a sistah right now. Weird. And did she get a quick little botox right before the show???
Justin Bieber. Is this really happening? Is this high school musical? I kind of hate Scooter as much as I respect and admire him.
Holy shit. Kesha is high as fuck. And why is Trey Songz mouth open this whole time???
Seriously. What is Usher wearing? And I'm mad is voice is that much deeper live.
Nikki Minaj's ass has gotten even bigger??? She's ODing on those injections.
Best Male Video: Wow. Jason Derulo is nominated??? Fuck it. The BOB song is probably the best song, but Eminem'll probably win. But a win for BOB is a win for Em anyway.
Did Katy just adlib??? Nice.
Holy shit. That mouse shit is trippy.
We've reached the part of the show where I don't know who any of these people are. NEXT.
And that goes straight into Travie? Interesting. WOW! And then they cut to commercial??? That's fucked up.
AND NERD is performing in the parking lot with Ciara? What the hell is going on??? BTW, she's flexible. Interesting how the less popular she gets, the finer she becomes.
Kanye better be part of this Taylor Swift performance.
Is it just me, or does Chelsea kind of look like Kendra.
Oh. I guess the Role Models chick is on Glee too. What the hell is this Glee shit anyway????
Best Pop Video: Let's go Katy!!!! I'm sure Gaga wins again tho. Yup. It's pretty funny that she can't walk in that outfit.
Rosario doesn't get a close up??
Poor Taylor. Come on. Something funny better happen. Oh my God. Are you kidding? Is this a forgiveness song?? Please.
ROFL. Swizz is not touching that piano. I guess TI won't be joining us. Mary still got it. Why does Drake's hand shake so much? Was Rihanna just talking shit about Drake???
Wow they gave Derulo a betweener performance too?
Did Sofia just call BOB B.O.??? lol
Best Hip Hop Video: Damn. Drake might take it. Rooting for my boy Cudi tho. Wow. Should've known Em would win.
Haha. With the pregger belly, Chelsea really does look like Kendra. That Jersey Shore jacuzzi was just stupid tho.
I guess they had Ne-Yo pair up with the jail bait because there was no threat.
Note to Swizz: Bruno Mars is really playing the piano.
BOB kinda ripped it. Shout to Gina Tucci for that one.
Oh shit. So I guess it's Paramore that sings that Only Exception song.
Who is this Pink look-a-like?
Romeo. The first Dominican on the VMAs.
Wait. What award did Bieber just win? LOL. I almost thought he wasn't gonna shout out Scooter.
New Linkin Park song was cool.
From this angle, and on TV, Cher hasn't aged.
Video of the Year: Gotta be Gaga, right? Oh shit. She can really sing.
That Aziz Ansari shit was a little wack. Sorry Jason Woliner.
Ye going in on the MP. I hope Taylor Swift comes out. You can say asshole on MTV? Is he wearing a red velvet suit by the way? Um, why was my first thought when Pusha came out that "Why is Trey Songz rapping on this track??" LOL. Trey Songz doesn't even have braids anymore.
OK. I'm done. Sound quality on this autotune is terrible, but I guess Kanye just sent a big F U to Big Brother.
